How a single blog changed photography forever

When Time needed a photo to illustrate its “New Frugality” cover story in late 2009, it purchased amateur Robert Lam’s image of a jar of change from stock-photo agency iStockphoto. The going rate for a Time cover had typically been $3,000 to $10,000. Lam was paid $31.50.

Why the drop in price?

Turns out there are now thousands of great amateur photos to choose from, so the market price of professional photos has nose dived.

The number #1 secret, more than an expensive camera or anything else for taking a great picture, is LIGHTING.

David Hobby, an ex-Baltimore Sun Photographer, started STROBIST –  http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.html

His blog offers a FREE course on PROFESSIONAL lighting; thousands of people have now learned how to use light to create great images.

This single amazing blog has changed photography forever.    If you own a camera, you need to check it out.
