Setting up an Email Account on a Blackberry

Last month we announced that we will be providing online support for email on the top three mobile platforms – Blackberry, Android and Apple iOS. I’m excited to let you know that we now have completed two of these three pages.  Apple iOS and Blackberry email instructions are now online. For those of you who missed it, here’s last month’s blog post about setting up email on iOS.

Because of the sheer number of Blackberry devices and software versions,  instructions for the Blackberry are not quite as straightforward as iOS. Our solution is a page with all of our email settings and a link to the Blackberry website, where you can pick your own device and follow along with their instructions, entering the Skyway West data instead of their own sample data. That said, just as I mentioned last month with Apple products there are certain pieces of information that are required to merge your Skyway West email with your Blackberry. Here is a refresher of that information:

Email Address: Your email address
Email Provider: Skyway West

Incoming email settings:

Account type: POP or IMAP. I usually recommend IMAP for mobile devices. Setting up with IMAP on your mobile device leaves the email on the server so your primary computer can continue to access it.
Incoming server: The address of the server that holds your email. Namely email.skywaywest.net
Username: Your account name. Typically your complete email address (eg yourname@skywaywest.net)
Password: Your email password. If you do not know your password contact Skyway West support.
Incoming server port number: The port through which your mail is received. Will be either 110 (standard POP3), 143 (Standard IMAP) 995 (Secure SSL POP3) or 993 (Secure SSL IMAP). Skyway West email allows you to use any of the above. Note SSL only secures your login credentials. SSL does not secure your email messages.
Incoming server supports SSL: Yes / No: Choose yes if your incoming port is set to use SSL. Choose no if not.

Outgoing Mail Server Settings

Outgoing Mail Server: The address of the server that holds your email. Namely email.skywaywest.net
Username: Your account name. Typically your complete email address (eg yourname@skywaywest.net).
Password: Your email password. If you do not know your password contact Skyway West support.
Outgoing server port: The port through which your mail is sent. Port 465 or 587 for secure SSL. (Note: SSL only secures your login credentials. SSL does not secure your email messages.
Outgoing server supports SSL: Yes / No: Choose yes, this allows you to send email from virtually anywhere.

I hope you find the instructions reasonably easy to follow. Based on what I have read at the Blackberry website I don’t anticipate people will have too much difficulty. As always, if you do, contact Support West Support. We’re always happy to lend a helping hand.

Next month I expect to complete this trio of blog entries by announcing our Android email instructions. The team is really looking forward to wrapping our heads around that one. In the meantime, keep those questions and ideas coming in. I do love to hear from you. Comment below or send me an email at support@skywaywest.com.
