There’s no way around it: As well-intentioned as Reddit’s power sleuthers may have been in their desperate, amateur efforts last week to track down the Boston Marathon bombers, they failed. And, yes, even the user behind the subreddit followed ’round the world is now admitting, in an interview with The Atlantic Wire, that his communal photo hunt was “doomed from the start” — while somewhat distancing his fellow Redditors from the media debacle they may have fostered, and taking “some responsibility for speculating about the possibility” that at least one suspect was someone he was not. Usually during Apple’s quarterly earnings calls, you have to read between the lines to guess what Apple’s really thinking. Yesterday, all you had to do was read the actual lines, because Cupertino was remarkably candid for a change: there was no way that the Apple of 2013 could match the numbers of the Apple of 2012, but “new product categories” — like the iWatch — were going to blow the roof off the house in 2014. Apple Inc. chief executive officer Tim Cook, taking a page from billionaire Warren Buffett, is auctioning off a meeting over coffee to raise money for charity. Cook is using the online fundraising website CharityBuzz.com to support the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights. After 38 bids, the highest was at US$185,000 as of 12:15 p.m. Thursday in New York, with 20 days remaining. The website had placed an estimated value on the meeting at Apple’s Cupertino, California, headquarters at US$50,000. Read More…
